Hand-Crafted Ceramic Art

Every dome and checker is slip-cast by hand in our Queenstown studio. I pour each piece into a custom mould I sculpted myself, trim and clean each form individually, then hand-glaze in layered, reactive glazes and high-fire to over 1200°C.

Made from locally sourced cream stoneware clay. No two pieces ever leave the kiln looking quite the same — that's the whole point.

My glazes are highly reactive and runny. They move in the kiln, drip and grow crystals, so colour, crystals and finish vary from piece to piece and from the photos. Glaze often runs over the rim, so I grind every base flat: you may see a little glaze or grinding marks on the back, but each piece sits flush on the wall. That's the nature of these glazes, and it's what makes every piece one of a kind.

Arrives Safely, Guaranteed

If your order arrives damaged, missing or incorrect, email hello@sammayell.com with your order number and photos of the affected pieces and packaging. Please contact us within seven days of delivery and keep the packaging while we resolve it. We’ll replace affected pieces at no extra charge. We don’t offer change-of-mind returns for colour preference or natural glaze variation. See our returns policy for full details. Your statutory consumer rights are unaffected.

In-stock orders usually dispatch within 1–3 New Zealand business days. DHL Express delivery to the US usually takes a further 2–6 working days, and 3–8 working days to other international destinations. Import duties and tariffs are covered. This is the one for the big wall. Build your own large-scale installation of hand-finished ceramic domes and checkers, sized exactly to your space. You choose the number of pieces (minimum 30), tell us the tones and glazes you love — and we take care of the hard part: putting together a set that reads as one cohesive artwork.

Every piece is glazed in our existing tones, in small batches, so no two are ever identical — and at this scale, that's the magic. Light moves differently across every dome and checker, giving your wall depth, texture, and quiet movement all day long.

How it works

  1. Choose your number of pieces — each unit is one ceramic piece, so set the quantity to the total number of pieces you’d like (minimum 30; e.g. for a 40-piece wall, add 40 to your cart) and place your order. Please order your custom set on its own — if you’d like other pieces from the shop too, pop those in a separate order
  2. Send us your inspo — Email: hello@sammayell.com pics of existing sets we've done, colour schemes, the tones in your room, and any glazes you love in our domes or checkers. Let us know if you'd like Domes, Checkers, or a Mixed Set (and any ratio preference) — then we take it from there
  3. Approve your set before it ships — we'll send you a flat lay photo of your finished set, and if anything isn't perfect we'll swap it out
  4. It arrives ready to hang, carefully packed, with everything you need to get it on the wall

Each piece: 200g Designed to mix freely — shapes, tones, sizes. Light enough for a single picture nail in plasterboard.

Packed by Hand

Each piece is individually wrapped, nested in eco packaging and boxed for transit. If anything arrives damaged, email your order number and photos of the affected pieces and packaging within seven days of delivery. Please keep the packaging while we resolve it.
